During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing
